Wine & Liquor Import & Export Logistics
South Africa is a serious wine and spirits exporter, and moving liquor in or out means dealing with bulk handling, excise duty and tight retail timelines all at once. Atrax moves wine and liquor end to end — from flexitank bulk shipments to palletised retail deliveries — with wet bond storage and Flow Management built in to keep costs and risk down.
How wine and liquor moves across the border
Wine and liquor travel two main ways: in bulk, as raw liquid shipped by the container-load, or packaged, as bottled and cased product ready for the shelf. Each route has its own packaging, documentation and duty treatment. Atrax handles both, and the right choice usually comes down to volume, destination and whether the product is bottled at origin or at destination. Getting that decision right early is what keeps a wine or liquor shipment cost-effective.
Flexitanks for bulk wine and spirits
For bulk liquid, the workhorse is the flexitank — a large collapsible bladder that turns a standard shipping container into a single sealed bulk-liquid tank, carrying close to a container-load of wine in one unit. It’s far cheaper per litre than shipping bottles and removes most of the breakage risk. Atrax supplies flexitanks and guides you on loading and handling so the liquid arrives clean and intact. For a fuller explanation of how they work, see our guide on what a flexitank is.

Wet bond: deferring excise and VAT
Alcohol attracts excise duty on top of normal customs duty and import VAT, so the tax on a liquor shipment can be substantial. A wet bond is a licensed bonded facility for storing liquor under bond, which lets you hold stock without paying the excise and VAT until the goods are released for sale. That keeps a large tax bill off your cash flow until you actually need the stock. It works on the same principle as any bonded warehouse, applied specifically to liquor.
Flow Management and retail delivery
Once product is cleared, the job becomes getting it onto shelves on time. Atrax’s Flow Management coordinates the movement of stock through the supply chain so deliveries land when retailers need them, not before or after. Combined with in-house customs and bond storage, it means one team handles the shipment from the vineyard or distillery all the way to the retail door.
