Live Animal Transport FAQs
Moving live animals is one of the most regulated and welfare-sensitive things you can ship — governed by the IATA Live Animals Regulations, strict container standards, permits and veterinary requirements. These FAQs explain how it works, what’s required and how Atrax keeps the animal’s wellbeing first from collection to arrival. Use the jump links below, or get a quote.

What is the IATA LAR?
The IATA Live Animals Regulations (LAR) are the international standard for transporting live animals by air. They set the requirements for container design, ventilation, space, marking and handling, and they exist so that animals travel safely and so airlines will accept them. A shipment that doesn’t meet LAR will be held up, so compliance is the starting point for any live-animal move. We go into more depth on our live animal transport and IATA LAR page.
How is animal welfare protected in transit?
Welfare comes first, and it shapes every decision — the container, the routing, the handling and the timing are all arranged to keep stress and risk to a minimum. The journey is planned to be as direct and calm as possible, and monitored so that anything unexpected can be acted on quickly. The animal’s wellbeing, not convenience, sets the plan.
What container does my animal need?
Animals must travel in a container that meets the IATA LAR for that species — correct size so the animal can stand, turn and lie naturally, adequate ventilation, enough strength to contain the animal safely, and correct marking and labelling. The right container depends on the animal, so it’s sourced and prepared for the specific shipment rather than taken off a shelf.
What animals can Atrax transport?
Atrax moves a wide range of live animals — from household pets to livestock and zoo or breeding stock. Each type has its own welfare, container and documentation requirements, so the plan is built around the specific animal and destination. The first step is always to confirm the species can be transported on the intended route.
Are some animals restricted?
Yes. Some animals can’t travel as normal cargo — certain fragile species, highly endangered or protected species, and animals with particular medical conditions are restricted. Protected species in particular may require special permits under international conservation rules. This has to be established up front, because it determines whether and how the animal can move.
What permits and veterinary documents are needed?
Live-animal moves typically need import and export permits, veterinary health certification and up-to-date vaccinations, and for protected species a CITES permit may be required. The exact set depends on the species, the origin and the destination’s rules. Atrax coordinates these so the paperwork is in place before the animal travels.
Will my animal need quarantine?
It depends on the species and the destination country’s rules. Some destinations require a period of quarantine on arrival, or before departure, to confirm the animal is healthy and disease-free. Where quarantine applies, it’s built into the plan and the timeline from the outset, since it affects both scheduling and cost.
How far in advance should I book?
Arrange a live-animal shipment several weeks in advance. That lead time is needed to secure permits and approvals, meet health and veterinary requirements, source and prepare a compliant container, confirm the species can be transported, and arrange any quarantine. Starting early is what keeps the move smooth and the animal safe.
Do animals travel by air or by road?
Both, often on the same journey. Air freight handles international and long-haul legs under the IATA LAR, while road transport covers domestic moves, deliveries into the SADC region, and the legs to and from the airport. Atrax coordinates the whole chain so the animal is handled consistently across each mode.
What does live-animal transport cost?
A live-animal move brings together several cost elements: permits, health and veterinary fees, supply of the compliant container, road and air transport, carrier charges, insurance, handling and any quarantine. Because the mix depends on the animal, the route and the destination’s rules, each shipment is costed to its specifics rather than to a flat rate.
How is my animal looked after during the journey?
Atrax plans and manages the journey end to end and monitors it in transit, so a deviation is picked up quickly and a contingency can be triggered — rerouting, secure holding or veterinary care as needed. The aim is for the animal to be looked after and accounted for from collection right through to arrival.
How does Atrax handle live-animal shipments?
Atrax handles live animals welfare-first: LAR-compliant containers prepared for the specific animal, permits and veterinary coordination, the right combination of air and road, and the journey monitored from collection to arrival.
